One of the most common topics that I can address is “How to care for your Chanel bag”. This topic depends on three most important themes to address: Wear, Care, and Storage.
Wear:
When wearing your handbag, do not place anything significantly heavy inside the cavity for prolonged periods of time. Do not put too many items inside the cavity, causing overstuffing of the bag. Doing so can warp the overall structure of the bag or cause sagging to take place around the corners, edges, and bottom. Avoid direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as this can lead to discoloration of the bag. Always keep in mind your actual clothing and choose your outfit carefully to reduce the risk of color transfer. Natural color transfer can take place from clothing to bag or visa versa. Wearing jeans with a light colored bag can cause color transfer on the back quilting of the bag if the bag is exposed to the dye of your jeans. In the same way, a black bag can cause color transfer to light clothing if exposed for longer periods of time. reduce the risk of color transfer is recommended.
Care:
While leather will have a natural patina that slightly changes over time as you wear and appreciate your bag, we do recommend conditioning your bag every six months. You should condition interior and exterior of the bag every six months, but no more than necessary, as this can lead to the diminishing of the natural sheen, leaving dull and flattened quilts. Just as we need water to feel rejuvenated, our handbags need conditioning to hydrate the leather. If we do not condition our leather handbags, the material can become dry, brittle, and crack over time. Conditioning also assists to erase, or significantly lessen, the appearance of shallow scratches. Doing so will also provide a revitalized patina of the overall bag. We recommend seeking a professional leathery service if you own a lighter colored bag. Use a microfiber cloth and a leather conditioner such as Cadillac Premium Leather Lotion, and work in circular movements to avoid leaving residue or streaks.
Storage:
We are aware that there are many theories for how best to store your handbag, but the theme remains consistent-keep out of direct sunlight, keep out of areas that are subject to moisture, avoid areas of humidity, and store away carefully. We recommend protecting the exterior of the leather by tucking the entire chain deeply into the interior of the cavity. If you do not tuck the chain, this can lead to deep impressions on the leather referred to as pressmarks on the front or back of the bag caused by the weight of the chain. Store upright to avoid damaging or deflating the quilts on the front and back. We do not recommend storing inside the box, but we do recommend storing upright inside the dust bag. Storing inside the box can hinder the leather’s natural ability to breath, causing the bag to dry out.
